A solo exhibition by Emma Stewart

Emma Stewart’s work focuses on the representation of the female form in historical art, particularly within patriarchal narratives in religion.

This exhibition will re-examine works by renowned male artists, such as Titian and Caravaggio, through a contemporary feminist lens and incorporating symbols of supposed ‘femininity’ and allegorical elements, reinterpreting these works in a contemporary sense.

By removing the female figure from these compositions, Emma explores the reliance on the nude, especially in works influenced by the male gaze. This approach seeks to create a more dynamic interpretation of the female form in art, prompting a critical dialogue about gender representation and the evolving role of women in artistic narratives.
