Peter Brown lives in Bangor. He has been a printmaker and illustrator for 35 years, specialising in wood engraving, birds and nature. He is a member of the Society of Wood Engravers and exhibits with the Society of Wildlife Artists.

This is an exhibition of prints of birds, many made from observations and drawings taken around Strangford Lough and the Ards Peninsula. Most of the prints are wood engravings – a printmaking process whereby the drawing is cut into the surface of a woodblock using engraving tools then an image is taken from it. The prints are characteristically sharp and finely detailed with powerful contrasts.

Wood engraving was a prominent means of illustrating books and newspapers in the 18th and 19th centuries and has enjoyed a revival as an art form in recent years. Peter has engraved the images from his own drawings and taken the prints using a Victorian handpress or by hand burnishing. A display of engraving tools and printing blocks accompanies the exhibition. The prints are mainly black and white; all are limited-edition and will be sold mounted but unframed.
