An exhibition of paintings by Rachel Lawell
‘A Woman’s Way ‘is an exhibition by Rachel Lawell that explores the change in social attitude with relation to social injustices woman have suffered historically.
The paintings created examine universal unjustness from the early 17th century through the exploration and study of the ‘agony aunt’ sections in early magazines. The figurative and portraiture works created act as a conversation through time with each painting portraying a certain theme or controversy.
By referencing agony aunt letters, we reflect upon the thoughts of woman at that particular time and the issues they were facing. We see how women have been navigating the world in silence, with the patriarchy lurking behind each question and answer.
A Woman’s Way acts as a reflection of the corruption women have overcome, celebrating some historical figures, and enjoying the sense of freedom the women gain throughout the years.
