Swimming a Long Way Together is a celebratory project by artist Vanessa Daws, drawing inspiration from 20th century pioneer swimmer Mercedes Gleitze. Mercedes attempted to swim the North Channel eight times in 1928 and 1929. Four of these swims started from Donaghadee.

The event will commemorate Mercedes Gleitze’s perseverance, the history of the town as the centre of North Channel swimming, and the experiences of swimmers today. Marking Mercedes’ eight attempts to cross the North Channel, the event will take place at eight locations around the town connected to her story and Donaghadee’s swimming history.

Event Programme: Sunday 24 April

Eight locations around Donaghadee will be animated to mark each of Mercede's swim attempts. Each location will be animated through a pop-up intervention - artworks, performance, talks and music – unfolding across the afternoon, on land and in the water.

1. The Commons / Robbie's Point (from 5pm)

2. Parade Green by Donaghadee Community Centre (5.30pm)

3. Pier 36 (from 5pm)
